TAMISEMI, The establishment of the Ministry of Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI) is enshrined in the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania Article 8 (1) 145 and 146 of 1977 and many other amendments thereafter.

In 1982 under the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania passed the Local Government Authorities Act No. 7 (Cap 287) and the Urban Authorities Act No. 8 (Cap 288). The two laws empowered the Minister responsible for Regional and Local Government Administration on the establishment of District, Village, Small Town, and Local Government Authorities.

The role of TAMISEMI is to coordinate and supervise regional development management and administration. TAMISEMI coordinates rural and urban development management policy and strategies; coordinates Regional Secretariats activities and builds their capacity in institutional development strategies for integrated socioeconomic development and financial.

The Ministry also coordinates and supervises development planning and sectoral interventions on donor supported programmes at district and other locals levels; issues ministerial guidelines to Regional Secretariats and Local Government Authorities; and strengthen the channel of communication and information flow between the national and sub–national levels.

In 1971 Lindi Region started with 3 Districts – Lindi, Kilwa and Nachingwea. Liwae District was established by dividing Nachingwea District in 1975 and Ruangwa was established in 1995 by dividing Lindi District. There are 6 Councils which are Lindi Municipal Council, Lindi, Kilwa, Nachingwea, Liwale and Ruangwa District Councils.

The Region also has a total of 28 Divisions, 152 Wards, 117 Streets, 526 Registered Villages, 3 Sub-Towns (Kilwa Markets, Kilwa Kivinje and Nachingwea), 2,429 neighborhoods and 8 Constituencies and 2 Special Seat MPs.

Lindi Region is bordered by the Indian Ocean on the East, Coast Region on the North, Morogoro and Ruvuma on the West and Mtwara Region on the South.

The region has an area of 67,000 square kilometers which is equivalent to 7.1 percent of the area of mainland Tanzania. However about 27% of the Region’s area lies below the Selous Game Reserve which is located in the western part of Liwale District
